“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
Many of us struggle to know what we are supposed to do with our lives, what God has prepared in advance for us to do, like the verse says. We read in Jeremiah 29:11, God has promised “For I know the plans I have for you.” God knows. Sometimes we think we may know…. But then we’re not sure or become totally confused. What is the plan God has for my life? How do I figure it all out?
In the Proverbs 31 Ministries First5 app I use in the mornings, we are studying the Book of Acts in the New Testament. In Acts, chapter 4, Peter and John are arrested for boldly teaching and preaching about Jesus and His resurrection. Peter and John had no formal theological education. They were ordinary fishermen whose lives had been impacted by Jesus.
Ordinary. I can identify. I often have thought about myself as not having any authority or credibility. I struggle with confidence and not feeling like I’m good enough. My feelings about myself make me question my abilities. However, I need to remember that God equips the called! If we are called by God to do something, He will equip us. God has prepared us to do the work He wants us to accomplish.
What are your gifts? If you don’t know, think about the things you enjoy doing, things that people often ask you to do. Ask family and friends what they see as your strengths. Take a spiritual gifts assessment or strengths test. Try volunteering for something at your church or school.
God has given each of us talents and gifts. He has equipped us for the work He would have us to do. One thing leads to another. We just need to “Do the next thing. Take the next step.” If we choose to follow God, He will lead us. Sometimes it’s risky and we have to step outside of our comfort zone. We have assurance that God has promised He will always be there. I truly believe when we trust Him, He blesses.
I have worked with teenagers for most of my adult life. I’ve had experience with education, managing, and office administration. In the past few years I have volunteered with an online women’s ministry. It seems one thing has led to another and now I am at a point where I realize all of these things have set a foundation and prepared me for what’s next.
Look back and see where God has been leading. Look forward and see where God is now leading. Hang on tight! He equips you when He calls you!
