Tripping and falling can be an embarrassing experience. Once I was a bridesmaid in a wedding and I tried to go up some steep steps at the front of the church. I accidentally stepped on the bottom ruffled hem of my dress and heard a ripping noise. I caught my balance and took another step. Another ripping noise. No matter how careful and cautious I tried to be, every step I heard another rip. Thank goodness it was only the hem that was ripping and it sounded worse to my ears than it really was! What could I do? All I could do was try to regain my composure and take the next step.
In the introduction to one of my favorite books, The Alchemist, the author, Paulo Coelho, writes “The secret of life, though, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times.” The point is, “Keep Going!”
I know what I have to do to be healthy. I need to have a plan. When I wander away from that plan, I have to circle back around and get back on the plan. When I get tripped up, I need to get back up, remember what my goal is and why I have that goal, and get back on plan. Sounds simple enough…. But it’s not easy. However, I do believe that Coelho is right. If I’m going to make progress and live a good life I need to get up and get back to it! Getting back up is the secret!
I think the “Why” is key to help me remember to get up and keep going. If I don’t have a why, I won’t have motivation and focus to keep moving forward. Figure out your Why as well as your What. Both are important.
- I want to write a blog because….
- I want to start a ministry because….
- I want to go back to school because….
- I want to lose 30 pounds because….
- I want to adopt because….
We each have a dream that God has placed on our hearts. We will make mistakes as we learn and go forward. The key is to keep taking the next step. Do the next thing. Keep going.
In fact, sometimes the mistakes are what help us to learn. We trip and fall but we must get up. Complacency keeps us down. It makes us give up and think our dream is not worth the effort. How far would we get if we simply got up each time we fall down? Each time we get up, we have the opportunity to move forward with experience and wisdom.
The choice is yours. How deep is the dream embedded in your soul? Keep the dream in focus. If we give in to our fears and insecurities, we are not going to fulfill the purpose and plan that God has for us.
Will you choose to live in regret or will you choose to get up again when you trip and keep moving forward? Remember, Jeremiah 29:11 tells us, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” So may you follow the wise advice in Proverbs 24:16, “The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again.”
May you learn from your falls, get up, and keep going!
